Keratin Treatments - Before & After Care

Dream of having smooth, frizz-free hair? Keratin treatments might just be what you are looking for! Things you need to know about the pre and post care of a keratin treatment…

Tips to Follow Before A Keratin Treatment:

1. The Procedure Followed

During this process, keratin is artificially added to your hair to make it smooth, shiny and frizz-free. The salon first cleanses your hair to remove buildup, then applies the treatment solution evenly. The solution is left to penetrate before being sealed with heat using tools like a blow-dryer or flat iron.

2. Chemicals Used

Though some treatments use a high dose of keratin, most incorporate chemicals such as formaldehyde solutions (or alternatives like methylene glycol and formalin) to help the process.

3. The Final Results

After the procedure, you can expect silky, smooth, straighter, and frizz-free locks. For those with very curly hair, the treatment might loosen curls rather than completely straightening them.

4. Protect Yourself

Because chemicals are involved, it is advised to limit the treatment frequency (for example, twice a year) and to choose a well-ventilated salon. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consider avoiding such treatments.

Tips To Follow After A Keratin Treatment:

  • Wait at least 12 hours (or as advised) before washing your hair.
  • If hair gets sweaty during the first few days, use a blow-dryer to dry it gently.
  • Apply a moisture-rich, sulfate-free conditioner to maintain the treatment.
  • Avoid products with sodium chloride as they can speed up frizz.
  • Use a shower cap when bathing and consider a silk pillowcase to reduce friction.
